1. Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Grease an 8-inch round or square cake pan and line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
2. Prepare the Cake Batter
- In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a separate large bowl, whisk together the sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Add the buttermilk to the wet ingredients and whisk until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Slowly stir in the hot water or coffee. The batter will be thin, but that’s normal – it helps make the cake moist.
3. Bake the Cake
- Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
