Instructions:
- Cook the Bacon:
- In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy, about 5-7 minutes.
- Once cooked, remove the bacon from the pan and set it aside on a paper towel-lined plate. Leave some of the rendered bacon fat in the pan for flavor.
- Sauté the Onion and Garlic:
- Add the sliced onion to the skillet with the bacon fat and cook over medium heat until the onion becomes soft and slightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Add the Cabbage:
- Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet and stir to combine with the onions and garlic. Cook the cabbage, stirring occasionally, for about 5-8 minutes until it starts to soften.
- Season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika (if using). You can also add red pepper flakes for a bit of heat, depending on your preference.
- Add Broth (Optional):
- If you like your cabbage a bit more tender and moist, pour in the chicken broth and cover the skillet. Let it cook for another 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is softened to your liking.
- Finish the Dish:
- Once the cabbage is tender and the flavors have melded, stir in the crispy bacon pieces. Adjust seasoning to taste.
- Serve:
- Serve your fried cabbage warm as a side dish, or enjoy it as a light main dish with a simple protein like grilled chicken or sausage.
