Apply toothpaste on a kitchen knife. I didn’t expect it to be so strong

Sharpening kitchen knives and scissors is an essential part of maintaining a well-functioning kitchen, and while many people use sharpening stones for this purpose, there’s an alternative method using toothpaste that can be effective. Here are the steps for sharpening your knives and scissors using toothpaste:

Materials Needed:

  • Dull kitchen knife
  • Dull scissors
  • Toothpaste
  • Porcelain bowl
  • White vinegar
  • Edible salt
  • Water

Instructions:

Step 1:

  • Start by squeezing toothpaste onto the blade of the dull kitchen knife. Spread the toothpaste evenly over the entire blade. Apply toothpaste to the scissors in the same manner. Let them sit for about five minutes. Toothpaste acts as a lubricant and helps remove debris from the blade.

Step 2:

  • Place a porcelain bowl upside down on a table. Add a few drops of white vinegar to the top surface of the porcelain bowl. Then, sprinkle some edible salt on the bottom groove of the bowl. The white vinegar helps reduce rust on the knife’s surface, and the salt increases friction for sharpening.

Step 3:

  • Take the kitchen knife, coated with toothpaste, and hold it with one hand while rubbing it against the porcelain bowl from top to bottom. Ensure that the knife’s center of gravity remains in the same direction without moving back and forth. Rub each side for roughly the same amount of time. After a minute or two, move on to the other side of the knife. Repeat this process for the scissors as well.

Step 4:

  • Once you’ve finished sharpening, rinse the knife and scissors under running water to remove the toothpaste and any debris. You’ll notice that rust on the top side of the knife has disappeared, and the blade looks sharp and clean.

Now your knife and scissors should be sharpened and ready for use. The toothpaste method can help maintain your kitchen tools without the need for specialized sharpening equipment. However, be mindful not to over-sharpen, as it takes just a short amount of time to achieve the desired results.
