crumpets

Crumpets are a delightful British breakfast treat that are characterized by their fluffy texture and distinctive holes on the surface. Here’s a recipe to make homemade crumpets:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Butter, for greasing the pan

Preparation:

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the warm milk and warm water.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and gradually pour in the milk mixture. Stir until well combined and the batter is smooth.
  4. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the batter rest in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it becomes bubbly and doubled in size.
  5. Dissolve the baking soda in a small amount of warm water and gently stir it into the batter.
  6. Preheat a non-stick frying pan or griddle over medium-low heat. Grease the pan with a little butter.
  7. Place greased metal crumpet rings onto the pan. If you don’t have crumpet rings, you can use clean, empty tuna cans with the tops and bottoms removed.
  8. Spoon about 1/4 cup of the batter into each ring, filling it about halfway.
  9. Cook the crumpets on the pan over low heat for about 10-12 minutes, or until the surface is set and the edges are starting to look dry.
  10. Remove the crumpet rings using tongs or oven mitts. Flip the crumpets over and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes on the other side.
  11. Transfer the cooked crumpets to a wire rack to cool.
  12. Repeat the process with the remaining batter until all the crumpets are cooked.
  13. Serve the crumpets warm with butter, jam, honey, or any other desired toppings.

Crumpets are best enjoyed warm and fresh. They can be toasted and served with various spreads or toppings of your choice. Their soft texture and signature holes make them perfect for soaking up butter or spreads. Enjoy these classic British treats as a delightful breakfast or tea-time snack.
