Homemade buttermilk biscuits

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add Buttermilk: Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until just combined. Do not overmix; it’s okay if there are a few lumps.
  5. Turn Out Dough: Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Gently knead the dough a few times until it comes together.
  6. Roll and Cut: Roll the dough out to about 1-inch thickness. Use a biscuit cutter (or a glass) to cut out biscuits. Gather any scraps and reroll to cut out more biscuits.
  7. Bake: Place the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, close together for soft sides or spaced apart for crispy sides. Brush the tops with a little buttermilk.
  8. Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Serve: Let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with butter, jam, or your favorite toppings!
