Apple Pie Trifle is a delightful and layered dessert that combines the flavors of apple pie with creamy whipped cream and a crunchy crumble topping. Here’s a recipe to make Apple Pie Trifle at home:

For the apple filling:

  • 4 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup apple cider or apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water

For the crumble topping:

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

For the whipped cream layer:

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For assembly:

  • Prepared apple filling
  • Prepared crumble topping
  • Prepared whipped cream
  • Pound cake or angel food cake, cubed

  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir to coat the apples evenly.
  2. Cook the apples for about 5 minutes until they start to soften. Add the lemon juice and apple cider/apple juice. Stir and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with water to make a slurry. Add the slurry to the skillet and cook the apple mixture for another 2-3 minutes until the liquid thickens. Remove from heat and let it cool completely.
  4. In a separate bowl, prepare the crumble topping by combining the flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, salt, melted butter, and chopped pecans/walnuts (if using). Mix until the ingredients are well combined and crumbly.
  5. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form to make the whipped cream layer.
  6. To assemble the trifle, start with a layer of cubed pound cake or angel food cake at the bottom of a trifle dish or individual serving glasses.
  7. Spoon a layer of the prepared apple filling over the cake layer, followed by a layer of whipped cream. Repeat the layers until all the ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of whipped cream on top.
  8. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the whipped cream layer.
  9. Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld together and the dessert to set.
  10. Serve the Apple Pie Trifle chilled and enjoy!
