INDIAN FRYBREAD

Instructions:

  1. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  2. Add Water: Gradually add the warm water to the dry ingredients, mixing with your hands or a spoon until a soft dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but not overly wet.
  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 2-3 minutes until smooth. Let the dough rest for about 10-15 minutes, covered with a clean kitchen towel.
  4. Divide the Dough: After resting, divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it into a disc about 1/4 inch thick. You can use your hands or a rolling pin.
  5. Heat the Oil: In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat about 1-2 inches of oil over medium heat. The oil is ready when a small piece of dough sizzles when dropped in.
  6. Fry the Bread: Carefully place one or two discs of dough in the hot oil, being cautious not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and puffed up.
  7. Drain: Remove the frybread from the oil and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve: Serve warm as a side dish or as a base for toppings like honey, powdered sugar, or savory ingredients like taco fillings or beans.
